Hiring a Private Investigator: Common Questions
When should I hire a private investigator instead of calling the police?
Call the police for emergencies, threats to safety, or a crime in progress. Hire a private investigator when the matter is civil or personal, when police have declined to pursue it, or when you need documented facts for your attorney or the court. Common examples include suspected infidelity, cohabitation affecting alimony, locating a person, background checks, asset searches, and serving someone who avoids service.
Can't I just search online or look into it myself?
People-search websites pull from aggregated data that is often outdated or mismatched, and they cannot tell you what someone is doing today. Following someone, tracking a vehicle, or recording conversations yourself can violate California law, alert the person, and weaken your case. A licensed investigator knows which methods are lawful and documents findings so they hold up.
Is my investigation confidential?
Yes. California law requires licensed private investigators to keep client information confidential and not disclose it to anyone other than the client, except as required by law. The person being investigated is not contacted or notified. Your consultation is confidential too, whether or not you hire us.
Can the evidence you gather be used in court?
We gather evidence only through lawful methods and document it with dates, times, locations, photos, and video, keeping the original files. Our investigators can testify to what they observed. Whether a specific piece of evidence is admitted is decided by the court, so we recommend reviewing how it applies to your case with your attorney.
Do you give legal advice?
No. Private investigators gather and document facts; only a licensed attorney can advise you on your legal options. If you already have an attorney, we can work with them directly and deliver findings to them.
How long does an investigation take?
It depends on the type and scope of the case. Background checks and records research are usually the quickest. Surveillance is scheduled around the subject’s routine and may run over several days. Locates depend on how much information is available at the start. You receive an estimated timeline during your consultation and updates as the case develops.
What will I receive at the end of the investigation?
A written report summarizing what we found, supported by photos, video, and records where applicable. Surveillance reports include a time-stamped log of observed activity. Reports are written clearly enough for you to act on and detailed enough to share with your attorney.
What can't a private investigator legally do?
Private investigators cannot make arrests, pose as law enforcement, trespass, wiretap or record confidential conversations without consent, access someone’s accounts, or obtain protected records such as bank or phone records without proper legal process. In California, placing a tracking device on a vehicle without the registered owner’s consent is also prohibited. We work within these limits on every case.
